July Leaderboard Event: how the ranking race worked
The July Leaderboard Event was the studio's first ranking race: the deep fire mountains chapter was opened, players were told to climb the leaderboard, and the first places were promised a unique beast, chems and hunter coins.
What the event actually rewarded
Three rewards, in ascending order of value: chems, hunter coins and one unique beast that was not part of the regular chapter pool. The beast is the interesting part, because it turns a ranking into a collection goal: a player who finishes high owns something nobody else can simply walk to.
Why the fire mountains mattered
The event was tied to a new area. New areas bring new beasts, and new beasts change which decks are worth building. A leaderboard on its own only measures hours played; a leaderboard tied to fresh content measures how quickly a player adapts to cards nobody has seen before.
| Reward | What it is | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Chems | Resource for upgrades | Speeds up the next deck |
| Hunter coins | In-game currency | Buys boxes and upgrades |
| Unique beast | Card outside the chapter pool | Cannot be collected after the event |
How to approach a ranking event
- Know the reward before you spend hours: a card you will not use is not a prize.
- Build for the new area, not for the old meta.
- Keep a second deck for duels; ranking races attract aggressive players.
What happened after July
The format stuck: a new area, a ranked window, a card you could only get by placing well. If the studio runs a similar event again, the preparation is the same: learn the new beasts early, because the first days of a season are when the pool is still unknown to most hunters.
